What’s it about?
This course encourages you to develop your literary and linguistic skills to become independent, confident and reflective readers and writers.
This course aims to enable you to:
- use integrated linguistic and literary approaches in your reading and interpretation of texts
- engage creatively and independently with a wide range of spoken, written and multimodal texts, exploring the relationships between texts
- undertake independent and sustained studies to develop your skills
Entry Requirements:
We would recommend a grade 6 at GCSE in English.

Course Content
Designed with a focus on the integration of language and literature, the specification enables students to see how linguistic and literary methods are related and to explore these links in their work. The course allows students to build on the skills and knowledge already gained at GCSE and prepare for their next steps. The variety of assessment styles used, such as re-creative writing, commentary writing, discursive essays and research-based investigative writing, allows students to develop a wide range of skills. These include the ability to read critically, analyse, evaluate and undertake independent research, which are invaluable for both further study and future employment.
Assessment:
40% mandatory CORE units (50% of which is an external assessment)
60% optional units (selected by the teacher – adapted to the needs of the students)

Employment in media related industries.
Academic
This course can lead in many directions. Former students have gone on to study this at university level, either as a media/film studies course or courses to do with marketing, advertising, design, public relations, graphic design, and video games design.
Transferrable Skills
This is a practical and theoretical course that often feeds into students’ area of interest. For those who do not aspire to a career in media, the skills developed on the course are transferrable to a variety of higher educational course or job related opportunities. Skills include: team work, independence, communication (verbal and written), presentational and organisational skills.
