Why Study Physical Education?
At The Canterbury Academy, we recognise that Physical Education has a hugely important role to play in ensuring we promote a healthy lifestyle.

The purpose of studying PE at The Canterbury Academy is…
- Offering a fully inclusive range of sports which positively impacts students’ physical, social, and mental well-being, through developing the students’ confidence, self-esteem and resilience.
- Delivering a broad and varied curriculum, that is as much about participation as it is competitive sport. This will enable students to lead physically active lifestyles beyond their school years.
- Develop students’ skills in leadership, coaching and officiating which are transferrable and can be used in future employment opportunities.

Physical Education Roadmap
Physical Education at The Canterbury Academy is taught in a sequential way to enable a smooth transition from Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 5.
Key Stage 3
Students in Key Stage 3 experience 4 hours of core Physical Education a fortnight. This comprises two balancing activities on a termly rotation. Students in Years 7 and 8 can opt to have an additional hour of sport on their timetables each week, we call this ‘Pillars’. During these sessions, students can deepen their understanding and develop their mastery skills in a range of sports.
In Year 9 students can select a “preference”. Students selecting Physical Education as a preference will gain an insight into fitness testing and training, leadership and coaching as well as technical analysis of a variety of sports. This is timetabled with a range of theory or practical lessons in addition to their core Physical Education.
Key Stage 4
Students in Key Stage 4 receive 4 hours of practical PE lessons. Students will rotate activities on a 3-weekly basis. This is to offer breadth, encourage healthy lifestyles, and a love for physical activity and sport.
Students have the option in Year 10 to select Physical Education as a GCSE pathway. Students can select either GCSE PE or BTEC Sport. These options enable learners to select the right pathway that is most suited to them and their learning needs.
Key Stage 5
Students in Key Stage 5 can select from a variety of options including single, double, or triple BTEC Sport or A Level PE. These pathways enable students to gain insight into the sports industry.
Over 200 students in our Sixth Form are part of our Sixth Form sports academies, and these qualifications can be timetabled to support students with their academic studies and sporting commitments.
Students who are a part of our elite sports programme receive 10 hours of timetabled sports coaching and fitness training. We also offer Sixth Form recreational sport and extracurricular club.
