Introduction

.GCSE Drama is a practical and engaging course that develops students’ confidence, creativity, and performance skills. The course combines acting, devising, and written analysis, allowing students to explore theatre from multiple perspectives—including as performers, designers, and directors. Through studying play texts and live theatre, students gain a deeper understanding of storytelling, character development, and dramatic techniques.

Aims of the Course

Students should have a willingness to perform, design, collaborate, and experiment with ideas.

While previous acting experience is helpful, enthusiasm, creativity, and the ability to work effectively in a team are essential. Strong communication and problem-solving skills will also support success in this subject.

Assessment

Assessment 1: Performance from text (20%)

Students perform two key extracts from a published play, demonstrating acting or design skills (e.g., lighting, sound, costume, or set design).

Assessment 2: External Assessment (40%)

The written exam (1 hour 45 minutes) consists of two sections:

  • Set Text Study – Students answer questions on a play they have studied, exploring how they would bring it to life as an actor, director, or designer.
  • Live Theatre Evaluation – Students analyse a professional theatre production they have watched, discussing performance techniques, staging, and audience impact.

Non-examination Devising Theatre (40%)

Students create and perform an original piece of drama based on a set stimulus. They also complete a written portfolio evaluating their process and final performance.

Next Steps

GCSE Drama provides an excellent foundation for further study in A-Level Drama and Theatre, BTEC Performing Arts, or vocational theatre training. It also complements subjects such as English, Media Studies, and Art, supporting a broader creative and analytical skill set.
